Mercury Point

ArchitecturePLB have submitted plans for the redevelopment of Mercury Point to create state of the art Purpose Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) and flexible commercial floorspace (Use Class E or F1) in a landmark building of up to 21 storeys (23,705 sq.m. floorspace GIA) in central Southampton. The scheme will provide vibrant social spaces for students across multiple levels, including access to rooftop terraces, as well as flexible commercial and public realm enhancements.

Following detailed pre-app with Southampton City Council planners, the proposed scheme will offer 811 student rooms within a building that sits at the western end of the Itchen Bridge axis. This prominent location has inspired a façade derived from Southampton’s salt manufacturing heritage, with additional influences drawn from The Solent’s coastline and the region’s maritime industries. The public-facing façades will be clad in high-quality extruded terracotta tiles, finished with ceramic glazes in various hues that reflect the local coastal environment. The internal façades, overlooking the first-floor landscaped student amenity terrace, will be clad in brightly coloured flat panels. These private facing façades will also feature standardised windows with projecting surrounds, reminiscent of the shipping containers at Southampton docks.

The highly sustainable scheme is to be highly thermally efficient to allow space heating to be minimised and supported by ASHPs or the growing District Heating network. A TM59 model has been developed to ensure that rooms do not overheat, with shading expressed as part of the architecture. Overall, BREEAM Excellent is currently targeted.
