Southbrook Cottages

A Zero Carbon pilot project for Winchester City Council’s New Homes team which aims to deliver 6x affordable council properties to Passivhaus Plus (Nearly Zero Energy) standards, and minimise the buildings’ embodied carbon.

As part of the process we undertook early stage energy modelling using the DesignPH plug-in for SketchUp. This allowed us to compare design options and agree the appropriate balance between conflicting urban design and energy considerations.

The Passivhaus Plus design is complemented by an analysis of the scheme’s Embodied Carbon that ArchitecturePLB undertook using a plug-in to PHPP. In this case, more energy is generated on site via PV panels than is predicted to be used. The balance is to be off-set against the embodied carbon, allowing the scheme to take further strides to being truly considered Net Zero Carbon and a true exemplar of low energy housing.

Heating is being provided by a Ground Source Heat Pump due to limitations on the site area and a single bore hole under the car parking area will feed all units. During the early design stages we worked with the sustainability consultant to ascertain the most beneficial combination of services with key considerations being usability, ongoing maintenance, carbon emissions and running costs. Ultimately, the option with the lowest running costs for residents was chosen resulting in annual energy bills of around £300/year (including unregulated energy).
