Portswood House
The scheme creates 435 studio, study-bedrooms aimed at mature and overseas students, mainly studying at University of Southampton. The design for the residential accommodation addresses a challenging site context, at the transition of a busy district centre to a quiet suburban street scene, whilst also creating a sheltered, sunny courtyard for the students.
The building steps in height and mass, moving from a tall corner element next to the supermarket to the west, down to a residential scale ‘terrace’ to the east. The rooms are complemented by a range of high-quality social spaces for the students, which enhance the academic atmosphere alongside spaces for socialising.
