Chamberlain Halls

The Chamberlain Halls site sits to the north of the University of Southampton’s main academic campus at Highfield, and close to the large residential campus at Glen Eyre.

The former halls, designed by Sir Basil Spence, had fallen into disrepair and could not meet current standards. The site was cleared to make way for a new, larger development, providing 356 bedrooms in the first phase, with a further 100 bed scheme for post-grad students included under the same planning
permission but not yet delivered.

ArchitecturePLB were appointed by Osborne as main contractor, to deliver the scheme through the IESE framework.

The scheme consists of 5 blocks, each 4 storeys high, arranged around a large landscaped courtyard with an existing tree retained as the centrepiece. Communal
facilities are located within block A, including a reception area and two large common rooms, fitted out to a high specification.

All en-suite bedroom accommodation is arranged in clusters of 6 to 8 rooms, with a shared communal kitchen/diner.

The project achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating, focusing on a ‘fabric first’ approach to energy use, supported by a central CHP
engine and a carefully designed ventilation strategy utilising heat recovery units mounted in the roof space.
