Worthing Integrated Care Centre

ArchitecturePLB work with Worthing Borough Council and GB Partnerships to design the Worthing Integrated Care Centre, bringing together a range of healthcare services and a multi-storey car park onto a single site. The building sits alongside the town’s key public buildings, including important heritage assets, completing the ‘Civic Quarter’.

Selected for our ability to design large, complex buildings in the most sensitive of locations, we have developed a design that expresses the key functional relationships within an elegant, linear form, arranged around a central, ‘vertical street’.

The building is home to a broad range of services, including a large GP surgery, mental health services, community services, dentistry, and a new pharmacy. ArchitecturePLB lead an extensive consultation process, involving multiple, diverse healthcare providers, to ensure that the key aspiration for truly collaborative working within an integrated service model is achieved.

Arranged over 4 storeys, the building form is sculpted to respond to the immediate context. The southern wing runs the full length of the site and is of a civic scale, comparable to the adjacent Law Courts and Assembly Rooms.

The north wing is subservient, with punched windows within a brick façade, striking a relationship with the residential properties opposite. A generous linear atrium is placed between these two forms, creating points of entry at each end of the plan and enhancing an improved public realm, helping to knit the scheme into the historic context.

The design meets the high sustainability aspirations of the client, employing a natural ventilation strategy that uses the central atrium as a vertical stack, with prominent ventilation chimneys punctuating the roofline. A low embodied carbon strategy has also been adopted, which includes the use of CLT structural elements to form the top floor office accommodation.
