Promega UK Headquarters shortlisted for Structural Timber Awards

Date posted: October 8, 2020

The new Promega UK Headquarters on Southampton Science Park has been shortlisted for Commercial Project of the Year in the 2020 Structural Timber Awards. Congratulations to Eckersley O’Callaghan who were the structural engineer on the project. The building uses a hybrid structure of concrete, steel and timber.

The building is split into two wings. A single storey green roofed wing incorporating laboratory and storage facilities. The second wing containing offices, meeting rooms, catering and leisure facilities is two storeys and has a sculpted folded roof.

The feature timber roof over the office and store buildings uses BauBuche, a hardwood laminated veneer lumber, with Cross Laminated Timber infill. The superior strength characteristics of the hardwood laminated veneer lumber enable efficient roof elements spanning up to 21 metres long, with column-free spaces below. The availability of the product is limited to specific suppliers, requiring expertise to manufacture and process the material.

The award ceremony will be held in Birmingham in March 2021.
