Portswood House shortlisted for Student Accommodation Award

Date posted: October 25, 2019

Portswood House, home to 435 students studying in Southampton has been shortlisted for ‘Private Halls of Residence of the Year’ at the Student Accommodation Awards 2019. Our client and Portswood’s Operator Vita Student has also been shortlisted for Operator of the Year.

Working with Vita, the design team have worked hard to ensure commercial viability alongside creating a safe, welcoming home for students with generous communal space. The accommodation sits around the perimeter of the triangular site, forming a protected central courtyard with controlled access. The mass of the scheme transitions from a six-story corner block including a two-story student hub and terrace, to a more domestic scale reflecting the adjacent residential terraces.

All rooms at Portswood are self-contained studios with their own kitchens and bathrooms. This allows students to have their own space and independence. However, Vita understand that social interaction is essential to wellbeing, therefore communal space is key. The Social Hub, spanning two floors, is the focal point of the building, providing places for students to relax, socialise and attend events.
