ArchitecturePLB worked with Lambeth College to develop a four phase masterplan for extensive redevelopment of their Vauxhall campus. The masterplan, which achieved planning consent, includes 25,000m2 of further education floorspace, a 272 bed student residence as part of a mixed use building and 4,570 sqm of “Maker Space’ ; shared workplace / incubator units. These are brought together in a new campus with new public realm and pedestrian through-routes. ArchitecturePLB developed a design code to inform the character and quality of future phases.

As part of the hybrid application we also developed the detailed design for phase 1 of the masterplan, the 10,000m 2 STEAM centre, a purpose-designed building for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths. The scheme is designed to be a distinctive building that will provide a strong identity for the college within the locale. Departments are typically grouped across two floors each with their own double-height social learning space forming a ‘digital spine’ which runs up through the southeast corner of the building. Large feature windows into these spaces and the building’s double height, glazed main entrance at ground floor level act a s beacon attracting the eye towards the college from busy Wandsworth Road.

The lower floors will house the construction department and feature large windows allowing views into the active workshop spaces. including construction workshops for teaching bricklaying, electrical, gas and plumbing, envelope and interiors and decorating. At the upper levels a range of specialist spaces including TV and radio studios, dental technology teaching space, science labs and a range of digital teaching spaces facilitate a full STEAM curriculum.
