Lambeth College STEAM Centre

Completion Date May 2021

Contract Value £28m

Client Lambeth College

ArchitecturePLB are currently working on designs for a new 10,000m2 STEAM centre at Nine Elms, Lambeth. The purpose designed building for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths will be the first phase of a wider masterplan replacing existing out dated buildings on the college’s Vauxhall campus with new education and residential accommodation.

As well as the STEAM Centre, ArchitecturePLB are developing a masterplan and design code which will inform future development on the remaining site. The project is due to be submitted for planning approval in Spring 2019 and the first phase construction completed in Spring 2021.

The design uses an anodised metal pleated cladding to create a dynamic contemporary facade that changes with changing light though the day and blends in to the local context. Large construction teaching workshops are located in the two storey brick base with more standard teaching spaces on the upper floors.  A double height space, the “digital spine” animates the south corner of the building  and provides an exciting flexible space for non class based learning at each level.

A new public square sits at the heart of the masterplan linking into the existing street pattern and bringing the overall masterplan together.
