Work starts on site at Alleyn’s Junior School

Date posted: July 8, 2021

A new development at Alleyn’s Junior School in Dulwich has recently started on site. We were appointed via a design competition to help the school increase the capacity of their infant and reception classes and redevelop their existing facilities.

Working with the school our design team evaluated a number of re-configuration options to make the best use of the school’s narrow constrained site. Our solution will create a new hall and reception building, freeing up space within the existing building for additional classrooms. The existing building will be remodelled bringing the library, IT suite and multi-function room to the heart of the school alongside the required new classrooms.

The new build part of the scheme will create a secure and welcoming new entrance for the school. The new multi-use hall will be flooded with light from both ends and have an exposed diagonal timber roof structure adding warmth and visual interest. Externally, a materials palette of red brick, clay tiles, and pre-cast stone has been chosen to reflect the existing school and surrounding area.

The landscaping strategy by UBU Design will unify the new and existing elements and include spill out spaces for the classrooms, and an adventure playground.

The project is being constructed by Neilcott and is due for completion in January 2022. Having designed the project up to RIBA Stage 4, ArchitecturePLB are now engaged as client design adviser to ensure the build meets the clients aspirations.
