New housing for London Borough of Tower Hamlets

ArchitecturePLB has been working with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets on plans for a new housing development which will create 78 homes for the local area. The proposals include new build affordable apartments sitting alongside a former Victorian workhouse building which will be sensitively converted to create 36 private rent apartments. The project was submitted for planning approval in April.

The project sits on the edge of a conservation area and has required a sensitive approach to maximise the site capacity for new housing whilst also respecting the urban context and surrounding historic buildings including the workhouse. The new build housing, providing 42 affordable apartments will replace an outdated office block with currently dominates the site and significantly detracts from the Victorian Workhouse. The scheme will restore this local heritage asset and reveal the building’s frontage.

The landscaping has been designed to work as both public realm and residential communal amenity, ensuring that security and privacy can be maintained for residents, while also providing an enjoyable place for the wider community.
