LABC Award winners 2021 | Avanti Meadows Primary School

Fantastic news that our project at Avanti Meadows Primary School, Bishops Stortford is a Regional winner for Best Public or Community Building at the LABC awards 2021

Here are some words from the lead Architect Michael de Nobrega ” Very pleased to get recognition for an innovative primary school design on a challenging site, that makes the best use of natural light and the most of the available views.”

When asked about the challenges within the project he carried on to say “The steeply sloping site required very careful regrading and levelling to create level platforms to accommodate the building, playing field and car park. As a relatively large 3FE primary school and in response to the constrained nature of the site the building is arranged over two storeys. To compensate for this, the corridors are extremely generous and feature open light wells linking the upper classrooms with those on the ground floor. Further light and ventilation is provided to the first floor classrooms through extensive rooflights over the corridors and high level glazing the rear of the classrooms. The spaces adjacent to the light wells are utilised as open plan group room, maximising the available space and further animating the school. The overall form of the building is broken down into two teaching wings, linked by a double height arrival space with a fully glazed aspect over the playground and playing fields beyond, creating a vibrant heart to the school.”
