Burma Road Student Village, Winchester

Completion Date October 2013

Contract Value £15m

Client Geoffrey Osborne Ltd

A phased new build development to provide new student residences for the University of Winchester, overlooking the historic city of Winchester. The project provides rooms for 499 students in cluster flats, along with a gym and café that serves the wider campus. Each cluster flat shares a communal kitchen, dining and living space.

The scheme has been designed as a series of pavilions to enhance its landscape setting. We worked closely with the city planners and the Winchester Trust to understand their requirements. The building massing and site layout were carefully developed to minimise the impact on distant views and maintain views through the site whilst maximising the number of student bedrooms provided. Verified views were developed working with the planning officer to select appropriate view points to demonstrate the minimal impact of the development on key views of the ancient city. The scheme achieved unanimous approval from the Planning Committee, which described the proposals as ‘well thought out, imaginative and well designed’ and ‘a fantastic addition to the City and University’.

Shortlisted for a Solent Design Award, 2014.
